Getting your card into your sphere without being weird about it
You cannot text two hundred people 'here is my digital business card'. What to do instead, in an order that does not cost you the relationship.
The mistake
The instinct is a mass text to everyone you know announcing the new card. Do not. It reads as a broadcast, it arrives with no reason attached, and the people most likely to refer you are the ones most likely to find it off-putting.
Your sphere does not need to know you have a digital business card. They need your details to be there when they go looking, which is a completely different job and a quieter one.
One more thing not to do: adding your whole contact list to a marketing list because you have their number. Consent for marketing texts is a real legal standard, not a formality, and past clients are exactly the people who will report it.
The passive layer — do this first
These need no announcement at all. They put the card where people already look for you, and they cost you one afternoon.
- Your email signature
- Every reply to every past client now carries it. This alone reaches most of your sphere within a few months.
- Your text auto-reply
- The people who text you are your sphere, by definition.
- Your social profiles
- The link in your Instagram and Facebook bios, so somebody checking you out finds a way through.
- Your voicemail greeting
- Say the address slowly, twice. People do write it down.
The active layer — only with a reason attached
Every one of these is a message you would have sent anyway. The card rides along; it is never the point of the message.
- 1Closing anniversaries. "A year today — hope the house is treating you well." Card at the bottom.
- 2A market update for their specific street or neighbourhood, sent to the ten people it is actually true for. Not a mass forward.
- 3Anything genuinely useful: a contractor recommendation, a tax-assessment deadline, a permit change. Be the person who sends useful things.
- 4When your details change — new brokerage, new number. This is the one time a direct 'my details have changed, here they are' is welcome, because it is information rather than marketing.
- 5Holiday and birthday messages, if you already send them. If you do not, starting now looks like exactly what it is.
How to know whether it is working
Your card panel shows opens and saves. In a sphere campaign the number to watch is saves, not opens — an open is curiosity, a save is somebody deciding to keep you.
Expect this to be slow. A sphere is a long game measured in years, and a card that gets four saves a month from people who already know you is doing its job.
